To help celebrate the ARRL’s Year of the Club initiative this year, an event was organized and held this past June called the “Club QSO Party”. Of course, your Club, GCARC, joined in!
GCARC participated under the callsign “W2MMD/67”, with the /67 added to our regular callsign as a fun way to celebrate the number of years since our Club was formed. As a fun event, the event encouraged Club membership participation, allowing repeater contacts, including via EchoLink (unusual), and factored in the percentage of Club members participating as a score multiplier (also unusual).
With Michael Pentimall KC3VTF on HF from the Club station, and myself Jim Wright N2GXJ on Club’s repeater on VHF, in the end we made about 75 contacts as W2MMD/67, of which 7 were with other club stations participating in the event, including W8WE/93 (via our repeater on FM) from Ohio. Of the 47 contacts we made to those that identified as being a member of any radio club, 38 of those were to members of our own Club, which was great! This included several members of our Club who would not normally have been able to participate if not for EchoLink. Thank you everyone who called in!
Speaking of EchoLink on your cell phone, here’s an endorsement for having it available, even if you don’t use it all the time. It is a great tool to have. And it really is easy as a licensed ham to set up. Just install the app on your phone, connect to W2MMD-R to try it once, and then it is there when you need or want to use it. Works great for our weekly nets, when you are in area, and out of area too. If having any problems, just reach out, and we’ll figure it out and get it working together.

Contact W2MMD During The Club QSO Party!

Want to have some fun by making a radio contact with your own Club, W2MMD? You can, and it will be appreciated! Turns out W2MMD is signed up to be a Club station participant in the Club QSO Party the weekend before field day. You heard about this event in person at the April Club meeting, and may have seen it mentioned in the May CrossTalk. Now for some more details.
There is an unusual “percent of your Club members who participated” thing that goes into overall scoring. And there is an unusual permission to use repeaters for contacts too. Well, let’s have some fun with that (and toss some points towards the Club in this QSO party while we’re at it)!
If you’re not doing much on Friday night, June 19, 2026 at 8pm, give W2MMD/67 a call on our 2 meter repeater! I’ll be logging contacts for a half hour or so with as many of our Club members that call in that I can. Think we can get 100 Club members to show up in log as participants this way? Help boost our “percent of your Club members who participated” totals. If you call in, we might! It’s that easy! EchoLink is accepted! The more, the merrier!
Saturday morning, June 20, 2026, out at the Clubhouse, Mike Pentimall KC3VTF, a.k.a “Saturday Mike” will be running the HF station as W2MMD/67, logging as many contacts as he can. Come on by and help him make and log a few Q’s if you get the chance!
Want to see how many Club stations you can contact in addition to ours? It should be fun. And might be a good way to check your field day equipment (if you want it to) ahead of the following weekend. They even have a special update to the N1MM logger, if you want to get practice with that logger.
