Radio Direction Finding “Fall Fox Hunt” Sat Oct 5
Do you own a 2 meter hand held radio? Want to try something different and experience some RADIOSPORT adventure? Then the GCARC Fall Fox Hunt is for you!
You are encouraged to join up with other club members to compete as a team in this mobile T-hunt driving, navigating, and radio direction finding activity all in one! Note that not everyone in your hunt party has to be a ham – for example, it may be advantageous for you to recruit a family member to be your designated driver, freeing you to fiddle with the radio while homing-in on our hidden radio transmitter.
How it works: With your team starting in a car from anywhere you like near Pitman, here in Gloucester County, check in with Jim (N2GXJ), this hunt’s coordinator, on our club’s 2 meter repeater (147.180+, PL 131.8) at 1pm on Saturday Oct 5.
After we know who all the teams are that are hunting, the radio fox will be asked to ID on the repeater, and then will QSY to the designated simplex fox hunt frequency (146.565 Mhz FM). The fox will be parked in a publicly accessible location (no private property) somewhere within a radius of about 3 miles from downtown Pitman. The fox will transmit for about 1 minute every 4 minutes on the hunt frequency, and the rest of us hunters have to find him by homing-in on the signal strength of his transmissions.
First to the fox wins! If any teams are still hunting after an hour, the fox will give out better clues, and will then walk-in any teams still searching, so that by 2:30pm we’ll all be able to meet up at the fox’s location to share our hunt stories and a few laughs.
Come on, get out of the shack. You know you want to have some fun. Happy hunting, and good luck everyone!
