The Advantages of Membership in the
GLOUCESTER COUNTY AMATEUR RADIO CLUB
Amateur (ham) Radio is both a public service and a suite of hobbies that’s enjoyable, creative, and downright fun. While hams enjoy communicating with others across the country and around the world, we also learned long ago about the importance of local friends that we could meet face-to-face. Whether you’re looking for help with a technical issue, understanding some new concept, just trying to avoid “reinventing the wheel” or looking for a place to help others by sharing knowledge you have, a club can be an extremely important resource.
For over 50 years, the Gloucester County Amateur Radio Club has grown and evolved into a successful organization that works to promote ham radio, further its enjoyment and provide communications resources to our community – for events and emergencies. Although our biggest asset is our diverse membership, we offer a few other things you might be interested in.
W2MMD Repeater System : The Club hosts 3 FM repeaters with coverage throughout South Jersey, Southeastern Pennsylvania and Northern Delaware. Two of our repeaters are located in Pitman. Our third is in Washington Township.
W2MMD Clubhouse : Located on open space on the Gloucester County 4-H Fairgrounds in Mullica Hill, NJ, the Club maintains a stand-alone site with a variety of equipment and antennas, covering the range from our lowest frequencies to some of our highest. Our more competitive contest and DX enthusiasts often use the station. So do some other members that have more limited resources at home, or live in an area where homeowners associations discourage antennas. We’ve even bounced signals off the moon and meteors! The station is available to all our members. In addition, this is the location where we participate in emergency preparedness exercises, such as Field Day.
Club Radio Nets : Our members hold nets and roundtables at various times, such as the Thursday night “ragchew” gathering – where questions are discussed and answered. It’s amazing the wide variety of subjects that are discussed! Sunday nights bring together those that are interested in formalizing their emergency communications capabilities through organizations like ARES/RACES, SKYWARN, and the South Jersey Traffic Nets. A digital mode roundtable is currently being formed, plus we encourage our members to create new ways for everyone to keep in touch.
ONLINE PRESENCE : The Club maintains a robust web site – www.w2mmd.org - and a Facebook page - www.facebook.com/W2MMD.
CrossTalk Magazine : Each month, “CrossTalk” is e-mailed to our membership and a copy is posted on our website. Considered one of the best Amateur Radio Club newsletters by many, it includes articles from contributing Club members and non-Club members that discuss Technology, Propagation, DXpeditions, Contesting, Regional Amateur Radio Hamfests, Club member contest scores and awards, and ARRL News and Events.
GATHERINGS : Events like hidden transmitter “Foxhunting” result in a lively recap over lunch. The Tech Saturday Forum that started in 2015, is another event open to everyone. Ham radio operators and non-hams are welcome to our W2MMD Clubhouse to ask questions about various topics.
MEETINGS : Each month, members meet on the first Wednesday to socialize, handle Club business, make announcements and enjoy a featured guest speaker. The programs are educational and entertaining. A wide variety of subjects are covered throughout the year and members of other area clubs are encouraged to attend.
LEADERSHIP : Any organization needs leaders to help it grow and evolve into new directions and find ways to best serve its members. Along with officers and directors, we have committees and groups that help guide and support the Club. We welcome hams (and prospective hams) to join us and find ways to share their expertise. Together, we grow as an organization and as individuals.
We welcome you to learn more about us. Take a look at our website and visit our meetings. If you’re already licensed, join a conversation on one of our repeaters. If you have questions, please contact us so we can work to answer them.
