Fox Hunt XXVI - The FortNight ( minus 1) Before Christmas Fox Hunt
Sunday, December 18, 2022
By Marc Federici WM2Y
It was a brisk Sunday afternoon with eight participants :
The hunt boundaries were as follows :
Jim N2GXJ was under the weather and could make it out. The Fox hunt was held at Tranquility Trails DiscGolf Park, 301-331 High Hill Road in Woolwich Township NJ.
Al KB2AYU was first on site but it was Frank N3PUU who found the fox first. Hunters were on site within 20 minutes, but it took them another 20 minutes to find the transmitter located in a pine tree near frisbee station 14 & 15. Muddy trails and strong RF reflections made for a challenging hunt. Because of the cold weather and the wet terrain no RF shenanigans were employed like 3rd harmonic suppressing low pass filters, rotating Yagi’s, and or even 439 MHz RF amplifier. May next time.
Frank N3PUU ultimately found the fox first with Al KB2AYU coming in second followed by Lenny W2LJR and his son Rusty K2LJR for third place. Karl W2KBF and Chris AD2CS arrived a short while later. While Doug KD2VQA rounded out the pack.
Frank N3PUU gets to hide the transmitter next time. That hunt will probably be some time in early spring. I can’t wait to see what Frank has planned for that one.

Hello Fox Hunters,
December 17, 2022
The Hunt is on for tomorrow 12/18/2022 at 1 PM. Check-ins will start at 12:45 using the W2MMD repeater and EchoLink : W2MMD-R.
The boundaries are as follows :
The fox will be transmitting 146.565 MHz.
If we have time at the end of the hunt I would like to run another mini hunt at the location using my homemade 2 meter low pass filter to suppress the third harmonic on 439.695 MHz.
I hope everyone can make it out for an hour of fun.
See you tomorrow.

Hide and seek? Find the transmitter
Sunday, December 18, 2022 By Jim Wright, N2GXJ Mighty Marc from Delaware (WM2Y), first to find the fox last time, has selected Sunday, December 18 from 1pm-2pm as the date and time for our Club’s next hidden transmitter hunt. These events are quite fun for the whole family, as you don’t need a license to hunt (listen). Just need the ham family member to call in to check in on the W2MMD 2 Meter repeater (147.180 MHz PL Tone 131.8 Hz) asking for check-ins. You can also check-in using EchoLink : W2MMD-R. Check-in before the 1pm start time so we know who all is hunting, so that we’ll know if anyone is still hunting after an hour, to help talk them in to the finish line where we have fun exchanging hunt stories and taking a group photo. Each car full of us will check in with him on the repeater, so that he’ll know who all is hunting, and can give clues if anyone gets lost. Then the transmitter is turned on, and the hunt begins! Can we count you and your family as being in on this one? By using a “warmer / colder” technique, where the signal is strongest when you are closer, and weaker when further away, or any technique of your choosing, the idea is to find the transmitter within an hour. The transmitter is a Byonics MicroFox 15. It has an approximate transmitting range of 1 mile radius. The hunt frequency is 146.565 MHz. The transmission mode is FM simplex. When you are getting close to the transmitter, you can switch to 439.695 MHz, which is the third harmonic, to get a better read on its location. Hunters are encouraged to team up together, as it is a great event to partner up with non-ham family members who can help drive while you home-in on the signal using your radio. So, who’s ready for a fun fall fox hunt! See you out there! |
