James M Mollica Jr., K2OWE (N2NRD)
My good friend Jim Mollica Jr., K2OWE (ex N2NRD) passed away unexpectedly on June 29th at 52 years of age. Jim and his father, Jim Mollica Sr., K2OWE, (who passed away about 2 years ago) were both longtime GCARC members. Jim and I first met as teenagers via CB radio during the CB craze of the late 70's. I got my Ham license first in 1986, he followed a few years later. We spent a lot of time on the Amateur satellites during their "golden age" in the 90's. We both worked the astronauts on board the Space Shuttle. I'll have to see if I can find the QSL card for that one.
Jim and I did a tremendous amount of work at the GCARC Club site over the years. We set up a top notch VHF station and worked many VHF contests with it. I believe we still hold an SNJ section record for our entry category in the June VHF contest. I hope to get the Club station back to that point in the near future. Jim was very knowledgeable about all aspects of radio and was particularly good at designing and modeling antennas on the computer with EZNEC.
Unfortunately, Jim was not able to make Club meetings because of his work schedule and, over the last 5 years, he had little time for the hobby due to caring for his aging parents at home.
I will selfishly miss having Jim around to "play radio" with in the coming years.
The hobby has lost a top notch operator and an all around good guy.
