What To Bring To The Test
|
The test fee is determined by the coordinating VEC and remains unchanged for the calendar year. The test fee exams coordinated under the ARRL Volunteer Examiner Coordinator Office for the 2022 calendar year is $15.00 and covers the exam session and not individual tests. Candidates that achieve a passing score on an element are entitled to take the next element during that session with no additional fee. Candidates that do not achieve a passing score may elect to pay an additional test fee and retest in the same session provided that sufficient testing materials are on hand. In both cases, the time available for the test session may not be sufficient to allow additional testing. Ultimately the decision whether or not to allow a candidate to retest lies solely with the VE team.
Below is a list of items the candidate must bring to the test session.

Test Fee : $15.00
Any person sitting for an exam, or having a new license or upgrade processed must pay the test fee applicable for the calendar year 2022. A charge also applies for paperwork-only upgrades even though no test is actually taken. Please have the exact dollar amount necessary as the VE team may not have sufficient change.
Proof of License for Upgrades
If you are upgrading your license call, you must bring the original and (2) photocopies of any current Amateur license and any certificates (CSCE) showing credit from a previous exam that you need to have counted toward a possible new license or upgrade.
If you are new to Amateur Radio and have no previous Amateur Radio license, this does not apply to you.

Indentification
The candidate must present a legal photo ID. The requirement is usually met with a driver's license, but it can be a passport or other legal indentification card with the candidate's photo on it. When no photo ID is available, the candidate must present any two of the following:
- Non-photo ID.driver's license (some states still have them).
- Social Security Card.
- Birth certificate (must have the appropriate seal).
- Minor's work permit, scholl report card, school ID card or library card, magazine subscription addressed to the minor, school yearbook showing the minor's name and photograph.
- Utility bill, bank statement or other business correspondence that specifically names the person.
- Postmarked envelope addressed to the person at his or her current mailing address as it appears on the Form 605.
FCC Registration Number (FRN)
As a US citizen, and as an individual ( not a company), our Taxpayer Indentification Number (TIN) is most often our Social Security Number (SSN). Under the requirements of the Debt Collection Improvement Act of 1996 (DCIA), the FCC is required to collect a TIN/SSN from each person doing business with them.
All current Amateur Radio licensee must provide a FRN when applying for a license upgrade or change of address. For information on obtaining your FRN, please visit the FCC Registration System website.
If you hold an FCC radio license for any other radio service, and you are applying for your first Amateur license, you must bring your current FRN as it will also apply to your Amateur license. Failing to do so, and using your SSN instead, will cause an unnecessary delay in the processing of your new Amateur license.

Calculator
Most applicants will bring some type of scientific calculator to use on their exams. Most of these, including some programmable calculators, are acceptable. The candidate must, at the VE's request, demonstrate that all of the calculator's memories have been cleared. The VE team has the right to refuse a candidate the use of a calculator if the team is not convinced that this has been accomplished.
Pencils and pens
Although most VE teams will supply pencils and pens for the exam session, it is always a good idea to be prepared with your own.
Other Materials
All needed forms will be supplied by the VE team. It will not be necessary to bring an FCC form 605.
