Meeting Program : Rowan University Rocket Project Presented By Nicholas Kreuz KC3RFB
This month’s program will be presented by three graduating seniors from Rowan University : Daniel Millar, Nicholas Kreuz, and Thomas Stanek. They are members of the 2022-23 Rowan Intercollegiate Rocket Engineering Competition (IREC - https://www.herox.com/SpaceportAmericaCup2023/team/17991) team, pictured below, and have been working diligently on a powerful 10-foot model rocket that will soar 10,000 feet into the New Mexico sky between June 19-24 in the fourth annual HeroX Spaceport America Cup (https://www.herox.com/SpaceportAmericaCup2023).
In this world class competition, the team will fly a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) rocket modified with custom components to meet flying goals and competition requirements. The program requires a payload that will store the flight data from the onboard computer and that is recoverable after the flight. During the past year, several members of our Club have worked with the team to improve the reception of rocket telemetry so that they can successfully locate and retrieve the rocket payload.
As component are finally beginning to arrive and construction is under way, some of the team members will take some timeout to present the highlights of their program to us. We may even see the partially completer rocket. The rocket will be driven from Rowan to the competition in Las Cruces - a total of 2,082 miles. We wish them great success.

Our guest speaker this month is Randy Smith, WU2S, the president and founder of Amateur Radio Emergency Data Network Inc. a New Jersey 501c3 corporation which supports the AREDN open-source software development project. His program, AREDN Networking - High Speed Ham Radio, will preview his 2023 Dayton presentation.
High-speed multimedia mesh networking is a 21st century solution for hams who provide communications support to emergency responders. It is also an excellent platform for learning and experimenting with Internet technologies. This presentation will showcase recent advancements in the AREDN project, how people are deploying it, and examples of applications and services provided.
Randy has built and maintains the AREDN website : https://www.arednmesh.org and the AREDN nodes for the Fair Lawn Amateur Radio Club on the 900 MHz, 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz bands.
Randy, his wife, Chris, and their micro St. Bernard dog recently relocated to Northbrook, Illinois near where they both grew up. In his role as Grandpere, he aids and abets Chris in her pursuit of spoiling their six grandchildren rotten.

For our August General Membership meeting, our speaker is former President and avid mobile operator Tony Starr, K3TS. He will take us on a brief history from the days of a Swan 350 under the dash of some old timer's '66 Impala, to the tiny FT-891 in Lee Marino’s, N2LAM, Subaru. He will admit that mobile HF installations have always fascinated him, so a couple of years ago he set out to build a capable mobile station in his Ford Superduty truck; the results of which look just a little nicer than that pictured below. We can benefit from his experience in that modern vehicles are some of the most efficient RFI generators ever devised, so the effort to make it all work right is challenging and remains a work in progress.
Please join us at the GCARC August meeting for a discussion of the complexities of building a mobile ham station in the 21st century, along with some of the most exciting surprises that were encountered on the air and on the road. Don't miss it!

HF Propagation
Presented By Carol Richards, N2MM Now that Solar Cycle 25 has begun, what should we expect and where is it expected to go in the next few years. Carol Richards, N2MM, will join us at the September General Membership meeting to give us her insights. She will start with the propagation basics : Solar Index Flux, Solar Noise the A index and K indices; all of which are fundamental to our understanding and basic to band performance. She will then discuss the factors which affect radio propagation along with the historical basis of past solar cycles and how they might influence the present solar |
cycle. And finally, a discussion of geomagnetic storms as predictors of propagation as they pertain to amateur radio operators.
Carol holds an Amateur Extra Class license, is an avid contester, and has attained 6B DXCC, 6B WAS, and 5B WAZ.
Please join us at the GCARC September meeting for this interesting and enlightening program.
